Cover design  The structure of P. putida cytochrome P450cam (CYP101). CYP enzymes catalyse the oxidation of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds in biosynthetic and metabolic pathways in almost all living organisms. The C^H bond oxidation activity of CYP enzymes has no analogue in classical synthetic methodologies. Engineered CYP enzymes with broadened substrate specificity have enormous potential in biotechnological applications such as biotransformation and bioremediation. Understanding the role of active site residues in substrate recognition and the construction of in vivo substrate oxidation systems are important steps to these goals.
