Conserved water sites in the B.stearothermophilus alanine racemase homodimer. The first monomer is displayed in pink, the second monomer is displayed in green and the PLP cofactor is rendered in ball-and-stick. Each conserved water site is represented by a colored sphere whose size is proportional to the number of structures in which water was observed at the same location, with red representing the most conserved and light blue the least conserved sites. The picture is based on an X-ray structure by Shaw,J.P., Petsko,G.A. and Ringe,D. (1997). For further details, see Mustata and Briggs, pages 223-233.
