Cry1Aa (left figure), an insecticidal protein that is active only against certain caterpillars, was redesigned (right figure) to be toxic to the mosquito Culex pipiens, by engineering loops 1 and 2. Toxicity to its natural target Manduca sexta was concomitantly abolished.
